What is perineoplasty?
The perineum is the area between the vaginal opening and the anus. During vaginal birth it often stretches, tears or is cut (episiotomy). Usually it heals well, but sometimes it heals thin, scarred or uneven.
Perineoplasty removes scar tissue, brings the muscles back together and closes the skin neatly. This can make the vaginal opening less wide, reduce pain from scar tissue and improve how the area looks.
It is often done together with a vaginal wall repair. In that case it is part of vaginoplasty or vaginal reconstruction.
