The basics

What is a breast exam?

A full breast check usually combines three parts: a clinical exam by a doctor, a mammogram (a low-dose X-ray of the breast) and a breast ultrasound.

Mammography is the main screening test for breast cancer and can show tiny calcium spots. Ultrasound uses sound waves, has no radiation, and is good at telling a fluid-filled cyst from a solid lump, especially in dense breasts.

In Korea's national program, women aged 40 and over have a mammogram every 2 years. Many women add ultrasound, and younger women with a lump usually start with ultrasound.

What it can find What a breast check can show

  • Lumps, including cysts and fibroadenomas
  • Calcifications that can be an early sign of cancer
  • Changes in a known lump over time
  • Causes of breast pain or nipple discharge
  • Signs that need a biopsy or specialist review

Good to know

  • A normal result does not mean you can ignore new changes. See a doctor if you notice a lump
  • Biopsy and breast surgery are done by breast specialists, and we refer you if needed

Before your exam

How to prepare

  • Book about 1 week after your period starts, when breasts are least tender.
  • Do not use deodorant, powder or lotion on your breasts or armpits on the day of a mammogram.
  • Wear a top and trousers or skirt, so you only undress above the waist.
  • Bring earlier breast images or reports to compare.
During the exam

Is a mammogram painful?

The breast is pressed for a few seconds, which can feel uncomfortable or briefly painful. Booking outside the days before your period helps.

Tell staff if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have breast implants, as the exam may be adjusted.

Your results

What your breast result may mean

Most findings are benign. Here is what usually happens next.

Normal No concerning changes

Continue regular screening, such as a mammogram every 2 years from 40.

Simple cyst Fluid-filled, benign

Usually no treatment. It may be rechecked if it is painful or large.

Probably benign Such as a fibroadenoma

A follow-up ultrasound in about 6 months checks it stays the same.

Needs more tests Suspicious lump or calcifications

Your doctor refers you for a biopsy or to a breast specialist, with your images and an English report.

Mammography uses a small dose of radiation, and no test finds every cancer. False alarms can lead to extra tests.
