The basics

What does an STD test check for?

STD testing looks for infections passed on through sex. Some are found with a swab from the vagina or cervix, others with a blood test, and some by looking at a sore or wart.

Many STDs, especially chlamydia, gonorrhea and mycoplasma, cause no symptoms in women. Testing is the only way to know, and early treatment protects your fertility and your partners.

A PCR test finds the genetic material of the germ, so it is very accurate. One swab can check for many infections at once.

What's in the tests Infections we can test for

  • Chlamydia and gonorrhea
  • Trichomonas
  • Mycoplasma genitalium, Mycoplasma hominis and ureaplasma
  • HIV (antigen/antibody blood test)
  • Syphilis (blood test)
  • HPV (DNA test), plus herpes and genital warts by exam

Good to know

Timing matters

When to get tested: window periods

A test can miss an infection that was caught very recently. These are general guides. Your doctor can tell you if a retest is needed.

Infection When a test is usually reliable
Chlamydia and gonorrhea About 1 to 2 weeks after exposure
Trichomonas and mycoplasma About 1 to 4 weeks after exposure
HIV (antigen/antibody test) Many cases show by 2 to 6 weeks. A repeat at about 6 weeks or later confirms a negative
Syphilis About 3 to 6 weeks, sometimes up to 3 months
Herpes and genital warts Best checked when you have a sore, blister or bump

If you are worried about a recent exposure, come anyway. Your doctor can test now and plan a retest.

Contact a doctor quickly if:
  • You may have been exposed to HIV in the last 72 hours
  • You have pelvic pain with fever
  • You have painful sores or blisters

Medicine after HIV exposure (PEP) works best when started as early as possible, and no later than 72 hours. Go to a hospital emergency room straight away and ask about PEP.

Your results

What happens if a test is positive

Most STDs are easy to treat or manage. A positive result is the start of a plan, not a judgement.

Bacterial STD Chlamydia, gonorrhea, mycoplasma, trichomonas

Antibiotics, usually for about 1 to 2 weeks. No sex until you and your partner have both finished.

HIV or syphilis Blood test positive

Syphilis is treated with antibiotics. A reactive HIV test needs confirmation, and your doctor helps you get specialist care.

HPV positive High-risk type found

Very common and often clears by itself. Your doctor plans follow-up. See HPV treatment.

Negative No infection found

Your doctor may suggest a retest if exposure was recent, and talk about prevention.
