Hysterectomy in Gangnam, Seoul: know every option before you decide

A hysterectomy is surgery to remove the uterus, and sometimes the cervix, tubes or ovaries, after which you no longer have periods and cannot get pregnant. At Sinsoe Women's Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, hysterectomy is listed among the laparoscopic and robotic operations, but whether it is offered for you is decided case by case. Female OB-GYNs also offer uterus-preserving alternatives such as HIFU and RF ablation for fibroids and adenomyosis. The basics

What is a hysterectomy?

A hysterectomy removes the uterus (womb). It is one of the most common gynecologic operations worldwide and is usually done for benign problems such as fibroids, adenomyosis or heavy bleeding that other treatments have not helped.

There are several kinds. A total hysterectomy removes the uterus and cervix. A subtotal hysterectomy keeps the cervix. The ovaries may be kept or removed, which matters a lot: removing them before menopause starts menopause straight away.

It can be done through small cuts (laparoscopic or robotic), through the vagina, or through an open cut in the belly. It is permanent, so most doctors recommend trying less invasive options first when they are suitable.

Common reasons When a hysterectomy may be considered

  • Large or many fibroids causing heavy bleeding or pressure
  • Severe adenomyosis with painful, heavy periods
  • Heavy bleeding that has not improved with other treatment
  • Uterine prolapse
  • Pre-cancer or cancer, usually treated at a hospital oncology unit

What it does not do

  • It does not always remove the ovaries, so you may not go into menopause
  • It is not needed for most fibroids. See fibroid removal
Think it through

Is a hysterectomy right for you?

These questions help you and your doctor decide together.

Question Why it matters
Future pregnancy If you may want children, a uterus-preserving option is usually better
Your symptoms How much bleeding, pain or pressure affects your daily life
What you have tried Medicine, Mirena, HIFU, RF or myomectomy may already solve the problem
Your ovaries Whether to keep them affects hormones, bones and heart health
Your age Fibroids and adenomyosis often settle after menopause

A second opinion is always reasonable before a hysterectomy.

Alternatives

Uterus-preserving alternatives at Sinsoe

For fibroids and adenomyosis, these confirmed options may avoid a hysterectomy.

HIFU

Focused ultrasound destroys fibroid or adenomyosis tissue through the skin with no incision, and you go home the same day. From ₩5,000,000 on the clinic's published fee schedule (June 2026); confirm before your visit.

Fibroids, adenomyosis

RF ablation

A thin needle through the vagina heats the fibroid from inside in 30 to 60 minutes. Volume typically shrinks by about 50 to 70% by 6 months.

Smaller fibroids

Myomectomy

Laparoscopic or robotic removal of fibroids that keeps the uterus. See laparoscopy.

Questions to bring

  • Why is a hysterectomy recommended for me?
  • Can I keep my ovaries and cervix?
  • Which uterus-preserving options could I try first?
  • How long would recovery take, and when can I fly?
If you have surgery

Recovery in general

After a laparoscopic hysterectomy, most women need about 2 to 4 weeks before returning to desk work and about 6 weeks before sex or heavy lifting. Open surgery takes longer.

Your doctor gives you a plan for pain relief, vaginal spotting and follow-up.

Types of hysterectomy and their risks

Each approach has pros and cons. Your surgeon recommends one based on your uterus size and history.

Laparoscopic or robotic Small cuts

Less pain and shorter recovery than open surgery. Takes longer to perform in some cases.

Vaginal No belly cuts

Often used for prolapse. Less suited to a large uterus.

Open (abdominal) One larger cut

Used for a very large uterus or complex cases. Longer hospital stay and recovery.

Risks All types

Bleeding, infection, injury to bladder or bowel, blood clots and anesthesia risks. If the ovaries are removed before menopause, menopause symptoms start straight away.
