Common, treatable, nothing to hide

Vaginal Dryness in Gangnam, Seoul, talked through with a female doctor

Vaginal dryness means the vagina does not make enough natural moisture, so sex, exercise or even sitting can feel sore, itchy or tight. It is common at every age, not only in menopause: breastfeeding, the contraceptive pill, stress and some medicines can all cause it. At Sinsoe Women's Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, a female OB-GYN finds the cause with a short exam and, if needed, a swab to rule out infection, with an English-speaking coordinator by your side. Swab results usually come in 1 to 2 days.

The basics

What is vaginal dryness?

The walls of the vagina are kept moist by a thin layer of fluid. This moisture depends a lot on estrogen and on good blood flow. When estrogen drops or blood flow falls, the lining gets thinner and drier.

Many women notice it first during sex. There is less natural lubrication, penetration can sting or burn, and there may be small tears or light bleeding afterwards. Over time, expecting pain can lower desire, which makes dryness worse.

Dryness is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Finding out why it is happening is the key to the right treatment, and in many cases it is easy to fix.

Common causes Why the vagina gets dry

  • Breastfeeding and the months after giving birth
  • Hormonal contraception, such as some birth control pills
  • Perimenopause and menopause
  • Stress, tiredness and too little arousal before sex
  • Some medicines, such as antihistamines, some antidepressants and cancer treatments
  • Soaps, douches and scented products that irritate

Talking about sex

Is it awkward to bring up?

Not here. Pain and dryness during sex are among the most common reasons women see a gynecologist. Your doctor is a woman and has heard it all. You can say as much or as little as you like.

If you have a partner, you are welcome to come alone or together.

By life stage

What usually causes dryness at each stage of life

The same symptom can have very different causes. This is why your doctor asks about your stage of life first.

After birth and breastfeeding Low estrogen while nursing

Very common and usually temporary. Lubricants and moisturisers help, and your doctor can suggest options that are safe while breastfeeding.

On the pill Some hormonal contraceptives

Some women feel drier on certain pills. Your doctor may suggest another method. See contraceptive counseling.

Stress and arousal Busy life, tiredness, anxiety

Less arousal means less natural lubrication. Time, communication and sometimes sexual health counseling can help.

Perimenopause and menopause Falling estrogen

Dryness often keeps getting worse without treatment, but it responds well to care. See menopause therapy.

Quick answers

Vaginal dryness: common questions

Where can I get help for vaginal dryness in Gangnam with an English-speaking doctor?

Sinsoe Women's Clinic at 537 Nonhyeon-ro, Gangnam-gu, Seoul offers help for vaginal dryness with female doctors and an English-speaking coordinator. It is a 4-minute walk from Eonju Station Exit 7 (Line 9). Book on WhatsApp at +82-10-9517-5719.

Can breastfeeding cause vaginal dryness?

Yes. Estrogen stays low while you breastfeed, so dryness and painful sex are common for months after birth. It usually improves after weaning, and safe treatments exist in the meantime.

Can the birth control pill cause vaginal dryness?

It can for some women. If dryness started after you began a new pill, tell your doctor. Switching to another method often helps.

Why does sex hurt when I am dry?

Without enough moisture, friction irritates the thin vaginal lining and can cause small tears. Pain can also make the pelvic muscles tense, which adds to the discomfort. Treating the dryness usually breaks this cycle.

Can stress cause vaginal dryness?

Yes. Stress, tiredness and anxiety can lower arousal, and arousal is what produces natural lubrication. Physical causes should still be checked.

Is vaginal dryness a sign of menopause?

It can be one of the first signs, often together with irregular periods or hot flushes. But younger women get it too, so your doctor looks at the whole picture.

Can tourists see a doctor for vaginal dryness without Korean insurance?

Yes. Visitors are seen as self-pay patients. Bring your passport and message the coordinator for a cost estimate.

Are all the doctors female?

Yes. Every doctor at Sinsoe Women's Clinic is a woman.
